Rottnest Island charters are generally a minimum of 6-8 hours. The crossing from Fremantle to the island takes about 1.25 hours at a leisurely pace. Once you get there, it is time to relax, have a swim, fire up the BBQ and kick back. The earlier you go, the better as you tend to avoid the sea breeze. This comes in the late morning to early afternoon and generally means you will have a bumpy journey coming back to port.
All journeys to Rottnest Island are subject to marine park entry fees, or what we call "RIA landing fees". These must be paid prior to departure and are based on a cost per person. There are two types of fees. If you just intend to anchor in a bay and swim, then the "swimming fee" is around $11.50 per person. However, should you actually wish to land on the island and visit the pub or shops, a $19 per person fee is applicable. Note: if one person lands, everyone pays the $19 per person fee!
As far as Rottnest Island boat charter destinations go, most skippers will take you to where the wind is best. Obviously Th0mson Bay is a big favourite, but others will go to Parakeet or Little Parakeet Bay.
